Western Swing Lead
by Joe Carr
In this third article using the Red River Valley changes, I have borrowed and altered a classic solo by jazz guitarist Jimmy Wyble. Many readers may be unaware that Wyble performed and recorded with the Bob Wills band in the 1940s in a twin-guitar combination with Cameron Hill.
The early 1940s recording of Roly Poly is a great showcase for this sound from the harmonized introduction to Wyble's defining solo. Two of these licks have become required on any modern performance of the song. The simple introductory lick that outlines the major chord sets the tone.
The octave lick in measures 9-11 builds the solo from the 1 to the 4 chord and should be considered essential to your Western Swing lick collection.
