The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo Concert – A Celebration of South American Music
The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo, Ensemble-in-Residence at Mannes College of Music, will perform in concert at the newly renovated Mannes Concert Hall, 150 West 85th Street in New York City, on Sunday, April 18, 2004 at 7:30 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature collaborations with international guest artists from the Mannes Graduate Studies Program: mezzo-soprano Malena Dayen from Buenos Aires, Argentina and flutist Cassia Lima from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The program will include songs by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera, Uruguayan composer Alfonso Broqua, and the famed Tango Suite for two guitars of Astor Piazzolla. This is the rescheduled concert that was postponed because of the big December snowstorm.

Week-Long Guitar MasterClass
The COMMUNITY CHEMIN NEUF of Lyon, France (an ecumenical Christian Community
with thousands of members world-wide, sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church), is pleased to
announce a week-long guitar masterclass directed by American-born classical guitarist, composer and
author, Anthony Glise in the beautiful historic city of Chartres, France, roughly one hour south of Paris.
The masterclass series is titled “Six Strings and the Spirit” and will run from July 30 through
August 5, 2004. Fees, which include all classes, room and board, are $275 for performers and $175 for
auditors.
Each student will have the chance to perform every day in masterclass and be assigned a duo
partner or ensemble to prepare pieces suitable for performance as well as music that could be used in
church services. The class will culminate with a final concert in Chartres Cathedral (open to the public)
in which all performers will present one work suitable for both concert and church performance.
Guitarists from all levels and musical styles are welcome. Traditional classical guitarists will
receive extensive interpretation and coaching sessions including technique, historical performance
practice and repertoire development. Non-classical guitarists will receive basic classical guitar
instruction. Both groups will receive instruction on using music in their home church and arranging
music for the diverse musical ensembles that often exist in a church. Ensembles with other instruments
that include guitar are also welcome. Ensemble members should apply individually.
For guitarists who don’t read music, there will be additional classes on basic note reading and
guitar technique.
