Bully of the Town
by Steve Kaufman
Hi friends!
Here is another great song that lends itself to solo guitar work both in the Carter Style and my favorite - the Crosspicking style.
You have two solos here. The first is pretty straight forward. You will find a mix of Carter passages (a melody note in the bass and then a strum) as well as some really nice bass runs.
After you feel comfortable with the first break, move on to the second but in order to prepare yourself with the motor skills involved in Crosspicking, practice the first measure over and over. Put an egg timer on and play it for 3 minutes straight. You also MUST be sure to pay attention to the down ups. Eighth notes always alternate DOWN on the down beat and UP on the "+" beat. Watch the arrows. When you are positive you are playing the right hand correctly, start to play through the arrangement. Keep in mind that most measures use the same Crosspicking pattern so you only need to see what strings you need to play and keep the pattern going.
Have fun with this piece, relax the right hand and let me know how it treats you. You will find Crosspicking to different degrees in nearly all my books and DVDs if you want another look at this beautiful style of traditional guitar playing.
Bye for now,
Steve Kaufman
