Mel Bay's Modern Classical Guitar Method, Grade 1
by Stephen Rekas
Mel Bay's Modern Classical Guitar Method 21548BCD is the classical guitar edition of the world's leading plectrum guitar method series. Conceived by well-known concert guitarist and teacher Stanley Yates, this carefully graduated method introduces the beginning classical guitarist to note reading, correct hand and sitting positions, practice techniques, arpeggio and scale technique, and chord and melody playing in the first position.
A separate companion DVD will be available soon and closely parallels the book/CD that serves as its foundation; its inherent visual nature allows the author to not only perform selections from the book, but share musical and technical concepts to an unprecedented degree. For example, ideas about tone production, including angle of attack and fingernail care, are addressed in a manner that cannot be communicated with words alone.
With the Modern Classical Guitar Method, Grade 1 book/CD and DVD in hand, you'll have the opportunity to study with a masterful guitarist, almost as if you as if you were being given a private lesson.
In the tradition of Mel Bay's original Modern Guitar Method, The Modern Classical Guitar Method,
Grade 1:
- Gets the student up and playing within the first few pages.
- Combines ease of learning with outstanding music selections.
- Provides music theory essential to understanding the book's performance demands.
- Includes carefully graded studies and pieces to develop confidence in sight reading.
- Establishes a solid technical foundation applicable to any style of music.
- Cultivates musicianship with an awareness of tone, dynamics and rhythmic accuracy.
The technique taught by Stanley Yates in The Modern Classical Guitar Method, Grade 1 and its companion DVD is comparable to what you would learn in a European conservatory or private studio in your first months of study. As the author believes the guitar is a right-handed instrument and that, ".the right hand must be fundamentally secure before the left hand can be developed," the Grade 1 book and DVD focus primarily on the right hand and its application to arpeggio rather than melodic playing.

The method is very carefully graduated and while the DVD closely parallels the book/CD, its inherent visual nature allows the author to share concepts and tips rarely discussed in such depth in other guitar methods. The book and companion CD also contain a lot of exercises and short solos and duets, so could serve well in a studio environment.
Here's a point I didn't mention above: It is also a part of the Mel Bay tradition to put us all on a level playing field. It doesn't matter whether you live in a metropolitan area or on a country back road. With this book/CD and DVD combination and virtuoso guitarist Stanley Yates as your teacher, you don't have to go to Spain or even a university guitar department to correctly learn the basics of playing the classic guitar.
If you've ever had the urge to learn proper nylon-string technique, go for it with The Modern Classical Guitar Method.
